# Taking an Order

> Add items, adjust quantity, and send to the kitchen

## Adding an item

1. Browse or search for the item in the menu grid.
2. Tap the item to add it to the cart.
3. If the item has variants or modifiers, you'll be prompted to choose them first — see [Variants & Modifiers](/pos-app/orders/variants-and-modifiers).

## Adjusting quantity

Tap an item already in the cart to open the quantity popup, where you can:

* Increase or decrease the quantity
* Remove the item
* Add a note for the kitchen

## Sending to the kitchen

Once you're ready:

1. Tap **Send to Kitchen**.
2. The order fires to the kitchen display (KDS) or kitchen printer.

  Items added after the first send show under a **NEW ORDER** label and need a separate **Update** tap to reach the kitchen.

## Holding an order

If a guest isn't ready to finish ordering, or you need to step away:

1. Tap **Hold**.
2. The order is saved and can be resumed later from the **Hold** menu.

## Canceling an item before it's sent

Items that haven't been sent to the kitchen yet can simply be removed from the cart — tap the item and choose **Remove**. Once an item has been sent, use [Void](/pos-app/orders/void-comp-and-gift) instead.
